I kinda feel like French should be classified in “fixed stress” (last syllable), but it varies by dialect because of how the final schwa in nouns/adjives/verbs behaves (/ə/) – in Canadian dialects, the final schwa is very much just an less common optional epenthetic filler vowel added (often at the end of the sentence) to slow down speech (and in songs with a less popular version of the language) and is usually not used. In dialects from Southern France it’s very much alive (so the value of ‘no fixed stress’ makes sense). Dialects from Northern France are somewhere in-between in behavior.
